Environmental Sustainability Program

Sustainable development... "meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."
- United Nations Brundtland Commission Report, 1987

New Program Helps Residents Save Energy and Money!

ENERGY UPGRADE MOUNTAIN VIEW - As seen on CBS Ch. 5 TV News!!

Energy Upgrade Mountain View, or EUMV, is a City-sponsored program that offers no-cost home energy assessments and monthly energy usage alerts and reminders for both homeowners and renters. EUMV's goal is to help residents save money on their utility bills by reducing their energy use and to help the City meet its greenhouse gas reduction targets. EUMV focuses on identifying those energy-saving actions that provide the greatest savings at the lowest cost.

Between April 2011 and November 2012, EUMV enrolled 1,306 residents, who are collectively saving approximately 450 metric tons of carbon each year. The average EUMV participant lowered their energy bill by about $45 per year, while the top 25 percent of participants, in terms of energy saved, reduced their energy bills by approximately $350 per year.

Energy Upgrade Mountain View was initially funded through the Federal Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program.

Recycling and Zero Waste

In 2006, Mountain View residents and businesses diverted 72 percent of materials from the landfill through the City's recycling, reuse and waste reduction program services. One of the items in the Environmental Sustainability Action Plan was creation of a Zero Waste Plan. As a result, a study to characterize Mountain View's remaining waste was conducted and a draft Zero Waste Plan was created. The draft vision provides that by 2025, all discarded materials are recovered for their highest and best use, and no materials are sent to landfills or incinerators. To achieve that vision, the goals call for an 80 percent diversion rate by 2015 and a 90 percent diversion rate by 2020.

More information about the City's recycling services and Zero Waste Plan can be found at www.MVRecycle.org.
