Current Goals and Conditions

  Long-Term Water Conservation Goal

               Watch the announcement!

Due to abundant precipitation this past winter, Governor Brown has declared an end to California's three-year drought. Though the state's water supplies are in good shape for 2011, conserving water in the long-term remains as important as ever.

New State-wide mandates for water conservation require cities throughout California to reduce per capita water use 20% by 2020.

Thanks to the efforts of our residents and businesses, the City of Mountain View has reduced its water use by over 10% in the last five years. Continuing these efforts are essential to meeting our long-term conservation goals.

Current Water Supply Conditions
Mountain View has two primary sources of drinking water: SFPUC and SCVWD. Follow the links below to see the current water supply conditions for these sources.

Water Use in Mountain View
The City of Mountain View serves water to approximately 17,500 customers. Nearly 60% of the water served by the City’s water system is used for residential purposes. Almost 25% is used for irrigation of large landscapes, and the remaining water is used for commercial, institutional, and industrial purposes.  Click the pie chart shown to the right to take a closer look.

How much water is used indoor compared to outdoor? During the hottest summer months landscape irrigation accounts for over half of the total water use at the typical Mountain View home.
