Holiday Tree Recycling & Collection

Holiday Schedule
Collection occurs on all holidays except Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. If your collection day falls on or after the holiday, collection will occur one day later that week. For example, for the Thanksgiving holiday, Thursday collection would be made on Friday, and Friday collection on Saturday. See Collection Calendar for schedule.

Because Christmas and New Year holidays occur on Wednesdays in 2013-2014, collection will occur one day later that week after the holiday.  For example, for the Christmas holiday, Wednesday collection would be made on Thursday, Thursday collection on Friday, then Friday collection on Saturday.

On Call Plus Clean Up appointments and toter exchanges will be suspended during the holiday tree recycling period (below).  Typically, no On Call Plus appointments occur between December 25th through the third Friday in January, but see the paragraph below about tree recycling for specific dates.  As an alternative, to an On Call Plus clean up appointment, residents may call Recology and request a Voucher to the SMaRT Station to dispose of household items during this time. On Call Plus appointments expire on December 31st each year and are not transferrable to the next year; however, a Voucher issued in December may be used in the following January.

Holiday Tree Recycling for Homes
Holiday trees will be collected from homes at no charge between December 26, 2013 and January 24, 2014. Place undecorated, green or flocked trees at the curb on your recycling day (no metal stands-wood stands okay). Cut large trees into 5-foot sections (to fit into truck). After January 24, 2014, recycle trees either in yard trimmings cart (cut up), or attach an extra garbage sticker, or use a free On Call Plus appointment. (Apartment managers and businesses may arrange for special collection services by calling Recology Mountain View at 650-967-3034.  Please do not set out trees in the street at apartments)

Extra Holiday Recycling for Homes (1-8 units)
Unlimited extra recycling will be collected on your recycling day at no charge between December 26, 2013 and January 10, 2014. If you have more recycing than will fit in your home's "split" recycling cart, use paper grocery bags for extra recycling. Place mixed paper and newspaper together in one paper bag or small box next to cart. Place bottles and cans in another paper bag or box next to cart. In the event of rain, please double-bag recycling. Flatten and bundle cardboard pieces (no larger than 3’ x 3’) and lean against the recycling cart. Be sure to bundle large amounts of cardboard with string for faster collection.

Extra Holiday Garbage
Sometimes the holidays bring more waste than can be recycled or composted. If you occasionally have extra garbage that will not fit in your garbage cart, purchase an extra garbage sticker. Attach extra garbage stickers to bags and place next to cart so the sticker is visible to the driver. Please do not put bags in old garbage cans.

Stickers may be purchased from any local Nob Hill or Safeway stores, the City Library, City Hall Finance Department or at the Mountain View Recycling Center, 935 Terra Bella Avenue, Mountain View. One sticker is needed per 32-gallon bag to be collected.

Recycle Old Holiday Lights
Recycle broken or burned-out holiday lights by taking them to the SMaRT Station, mailing them to recyclers, or using them for craft projects:
