CLASS GUIDES                                            

Winter/Spring Class Guide, 2012

DROP-IN PROGRAMMING

The Senior Center offers many free activities. Drop in to enjoy billiards, table tennis, card games, and daily crossword puzzles. Or, just come sit down to enjoy a cup of coffee and meet someone new.

Seniors are welcome to use the free Exercise Room that offers treadmills, stationary bicycles, and elliptical trainers. Prior to using the exercise equipment each participant must attend the exercise orientation offered every Tuesday and Friday. Call 650-903-6330 to sign up.

In addition, a computer lab with 15 Internet-ready computers is available for use.

AQUATIC CLASSES
            § Aquatic Fitness- Exercises are designed to develop muscle tone, strength and flexibility as the body moves against the resistance of the water.            
            § Deep Water Exercise- Aerobic strengthening exercises are performed in deep water with the assistance of a flotation device.

BELLY DANCING
Learn the art of belly dance, and tranform your body and mind while exploring your inner self. This fun and free class is designed for all levels.

BOOK CLUB
The Senior Center hosts its own book club. Meet with other seniors for a lively discussion about a book chosen each month. For this month's book, check out the newsletter, "The Prime Time News".

BRAIN GANG
If you are willing to share, prepared to laugh, and ready to interact, the Brain Gang may be just what the doctor ordered. This class focuses on the relationship between emotional wellness and mental acuity. Each week, this participant-driven group explores topics that can impact our overall health. From decision-making and communication to gratitude and laughter, each area of discussion allows participants to learn something new about themselves.
 
CALLIGRAPHY

Work on projects such as lettering and design place cards, menus, invitations, and announcements for a special event. Learning important layout techniques is included. Beginning and continuing students are encouraged to attend.

CERAMICS
Multiple ceramics classes are offered at the Senior Center. Learn techniques, by hand and on the wheel, such as pinch pot, slip and score, slab, coil, glazing, finishing, and building clay sculptures. Finishes for sculptures will be explored. Students will have completed pieces at the end of the session. Beginning and more advanced students welcomed.

CHINESE FOLK DANCE
The Senior Center hosts two different Chinese folk dance groups. These classes promote the health of mind and body and may include stretch and barre fundamentals, learning various Chinese Folk Dances, and several performances annually. Anyone can join regardless of prior dance experience. Get in shape while learning more about Chinese culture and making new friends.

CHINESE LANGUAGE
The Chinese language is one of the simplest languages to learn! Join Mr. Ronald Young as he teaches you to speak Chinese, both Mandarin and Cantonese. No experience is necessary, and everyone is welcome! 

CHINESE CHORUS
The Evergreen Chorus of Northern California consists of Chinese American seniors who love to sing. Chinese classical, popular, and folk songs are practiced and performed at local communities and special events.

CHORUS 
 Like to sing? Join our performing chorus; all abilities welcome! Have fun while learning vocalizing and sight singing techniques in a range of music styles from popular show tunes to light classics.

COMPUTER CLASSES
The Senior Center offers a variety of computer classes through MVLA Adult Education. These classes include basic introductory courses ("Meet the PC", "Introduction to the Internet") and more specialized courses ("Digital Scrapbooking", "Getting Connected with Facebook", "Photoshop Elements").

 

CREATIVE STITCHERY
You are welcome to bring your own stitchery projects or you might want to learn one of the interesting needlework or crafts being taught in this drop-in class.

CURRENT AFFAIRS
Join this class, and you're sure to be involved in a stimulating and thought-provoking discussion and analysis of current events. Explore your ideas and opinions about issues in the headlines.

DRAWING & WATERCOLOR

Basic concepts of drawing and painting in watercolor. Students will explore color mixing and application, composition and detail. Many demonstrations. Seascapes, landscapes and florals will be emphasized.

ENGLISH CONVERSATION
Practice your English conversation skills in a relaxed setting.

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)  
These classes meet 3 times a week: Monday, Thursday and Fridays, and all classes include instruction in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students must take a placement test at MVLA Adult Education to determine the appropriate level of course BEFORE beginning ESL. Courses include "Beginning Literacy/Low", "Beginning High", "Intermediate" and "Advanced Low". 

EPISODES IN AMERICAN HISTORY 
Presentations dealing with a specific aspect of American history. Lecture format with time for questions and discussion.

FELDENKRAIS AWARENESS THROUGH MOVEMENT 
This class helps to naturally improve coordination and quality of movement. This series of gentle movements will help you discover more comfortable and effective ways of completing everyday activities. Lessons involve floor exercises consisting of small gentle movements. 

FIGURE AND PORTRAIT DRAWING

This is your opportunity to receive quality instruction while drawing portraits and figures of live clothed professional models! Instruction will be individualized; class is open to all levels and abilities. A variety of media will be explored: pencil, charcoal, conte crayon and inks.

GENEALOGY
Dive into your history with this class. Using internet resources, charts, forms, software and documentation guidelines, students will learn to locate, interpret and document birth, marriage and death certificates, and land, census, and basic military documents.

IKEBANA
Learn the Japanese technique of Ikebana, which translates to "living flowers" as you create flower arrangements. This class is open to anyone who is interested in learning this ancient craft.

THE JOY OF MOVEMENT
These courses are appropriate for anyone wishing to reduce stress, discover new resources for mindfulness, healing, and creativity, rediscover the joy of movement, or "dance as if no one is watching." This class includes gentle warm-ups, movement, and mediations from yoga; fun activities inspired by dance, theater, music and art that encourage spontaneity, awaken the senses, and stir the creative imagination.

KARAOKE
Come to entertain or be entertained! Karaoke equipment will be provided, bring your own disc if you have one. Most of the discs are provided by the instructors and are in Chinese. A variety of languages and musical styles are welcome.

KNITTING AND CROCHETING CLUB
Join this group of knitting and crocheting enthusiasts, create fun projects and make new friends. Bring your own yarn or use some of ours to make caps, booties or afghans for needy children and seniors. Or, work on projects or your own. All skill levels welcomed.

A LIFETIME OF STRENGTH, ENDURANCE, AND FLEXIBILITY
Warm-up, walking aerobics, toning and stretching. Learn to strengthen your body.

LINE DANCING

Enjoy an hour of line dancing with other line dancers! No partner needed.

LIPREADING (THE SPEECHREADER)
This class helps you learn strategies to cope with hearing loss, whether or not you are a hearing aid user.

LOW IMPACT AEROBICS
This class will provide you a full cardiovascular workout. The class is aimed at those who want to lower fat, cholesterol, blood pressure and have fun! There will be low impact movement to music paired with easy walking patterns.

MEMOIRS  WRITING
Writing one's memoirs is an exciting and effective way to sort out and record the experience that will be your legacy to future generations. This class will give you the opportunity to review writing techniques involved in writing your memoirs and receive constructive input from teacher and students.

SOUTH BAY COMMUNITY ORCHESTRA 
This full senior orchestra is devoted to serving the community by performing at senior centers, retirement homes, and rehabilitation centers. Music includes classical and pop styles. PAINTING CLU
Any senior who paints in oil and acrylic and is looking for a time and place to work with others should join this club. The class strives to maintain a studio atmosphere of mutual support and friendship. This is a drop-in club with no formal instruction. All are welcome! 

QIGONG

Qigong promotes your natural resiliency to stress and illness. The Senior Center offers several Qigong and Qigong/T'ai Chi combination classes. Learn about the beautiful flowing combination of movements of Qigong and breathing techniques that stimulate energy flow. 

QUILTING
The Senior Center offers multiple quilting classes and clubs. Learn how to complete a quilt over the course of the class or work on more advanced techniques. Students will be asked to regularly share their projects and information for the enrichment and enjoyment of all. Access to a sewing machine outside of class is necessary for some classes.  Projects in some classes will be donated to children and seniors in need.

SOCIAL DANCE             
Whether you are interested in formal instruction or just looking for an opportunity to dance, check out one of the Senior Center's social dance groups. Students can join the class, no matter their skill level, and learn a variety of ballroom dance styles like waltz, foxtrot, swing, two-step, cha cha, rumba, samba, jive, salsa, hustle, and more! Our social dance club plays American, South American, and Chinese music from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. The club is constantly upgrading their music to encompass different mediums and equipment. Come join the Monday night "Dancing With the Oldies", and dance the night away.

SPANISH CONVERSATION
This class offers practice in Spanish language conversation, small groups, discussions, oral presentations and current events.

SQUARE DANCING
Join this lively class for square dance instruction and dancing. All levels welcome. No partner needed.

STRONG FOR LIFE
Strong for Life is a muscle strengthening program designed for older adults. The program consists of a set of 10 core exercises involving the trunk and upper/lower extremities. All exercises are done in either a sitting or standing position using Theraband elastic exercise bands.
 

T’AI CHI
This class fosters positive mind-body skills, processes and events. T’ai Chi is an ancient Chinese martial art form developed to enhance both physical and emotional well-being.  It can increase flexibility and strength, while decreasing stress. Come to one of our T'ai Chi classes to learn flowing, meditative movements while having fun.

Wii BOWLING
Learn the basics of the Wii video game system while bowling with fellow seniors in this drop-in class! Haven’t bowled in awhile? No shoe rental, no heavy balls, just fun and wireless remote controls.

WOODCARVING

This is a friendly, informal drop-in class for beginning and more experienced carvers. The goal of this class is to become more knowledgeable about the types of woods, finishes and skills applied to this craft.

WORKOUT ON BROADWAY
Join this "chorus line" as students move their way into fitness to the sounds and choreography of Broadway and popular music. All abilities welcome; no previous experience necessary.

YOGA
The Senior Center offers a variety of yoga classes through Foothill College, MV-LA, and volunteer instructors. Each yoga class caters to the different needs of seniors, including modified postures, increasing balance, gentle stretching, and stress and anxiety management. Both beginning and more advanced levels are available.

ZUMBA
If you love the rhythms of Latin music and you'd like to dance away your exercise hour - even if you've never danced before - come join the Zumba party.  We'll merengue, mambo, samba, tango, salsa and more - all for fun.  You won't believe you're exercising, improving your balance, strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular fitness!
